What is a Circle?
Definition: What is a circle?
Summary
- A circle is a set of all the points that are the same distance from one central point
- This central point is called the "center" of the circle
- The diameter is the distance across the circle through the center
- The radius is the distance from the center to any point on the circle
- The chord is the distance between any two points on the circle
- Note that the radius is always equal to half of the diameter!

Notes
-
- A circle is a set of all the points that are the same distance from one central point
- This central point is called the "center" of the circle
-
- A circle is a set of all the points that are the same distance from one central point
- This central point is called the "center" of the circle
- Other than the center, there are three main parts of a circle:
- the diameter, radius, and chord
-
- To be a diameter, the line must go through the center point
-
- By definition, all points on a circle are the same distance from the center
- So the radius is the same no matter what point it goes to on the circle!
- The radius will also always be half of the diameter
- So the diameter will also be the same no matter where you draw it!
-
- Unlike the diameter, the chord does not need to go through the center point of the circle
- It just needs to connect two points along the circle
