How Do You Put Fractions, Decimals, and Percents in Order?

Order the following numbers from least to greatest.

Summary

  1. To put the numbers in order they all need to be in the same form, so convert them all to decimals
  2. To convert a percent to a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the left and drop the percent sign
  3. To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator
  4. Plot the numbers on a number line to put them in order

Notes

    1. We need all of our numbers to be in the same form before we can put them in order
    2. So we'll start by converting the percents to decimals
    1. Remember, a percent is just a value "per 100", which mean the same thing as "divided by 100"
    2. So we need to divide the value of each percent by 100 to get it as a decimal
    3. Moving the decimal two places to the left is the same as dividing by 100
    4. The percent sign means "per 100", so since we already divided by 100 our decimal doesn't need it
    1. Now that our percents are decimals, we need to convert our fractions to decimals as well
    1. So for 1/4 we would divide 1÷4, which is 0.25
    2. And for 6/5 we would divide 6÷5, which is 1.2
    1. Remember, the number line represents ALL real numbers, even the ones that aren't labeled
    2. So we can estimate the locations of the points in between labels
    1. Now that the numbers are all plotted, it's easy to see what order they go in!
    2. So now we can rewrite them in order in their original form
    3. 0.18 was originally 18%
    4. 0.227 was originally 22.7%
    5. 0.25 was originally 1/4
    6. 1.2 was originally 6/5
