What is the Y-Coordinate?
Definition: Y-Coordinate
Summary
- The y-coordinate is the second number in an ordered pair
- When graphing points we always start at the origin
- The 3 is positive so we move to the right 3 units on the x-axis
- The 4 is positive so we move up 4 units
- Mark that spot with a dot, and label it as the ordered pair (3,4)
- We went up 4 units on the y-axis because our y-coordinate is positive 4!

Notes
-
-
- For our example, (3,4), the y-coordinate is the 4
-
-
-
- If the 3 were negative, then we would first move the the left on the x-axis, instead of moving right
-
-
- If the 4 were negative, then we would move down, instead of moving up
-
-
-
-
- If the y-coordinate is positive we move up, and if it is negative we move down
